Ford has been a leader in the commercial vehicle market for decades, with its Transit range of vans and trucks offering versatility, reliability, and efficiency to customers across Europe and beyond. Now, the Blue Oval is ready to take the next step in its electrification journey with the introduction of the all-new E-Transit Custom, the all-electric version of Europe's best-selling van.
The E-Transit Custom is not just a conventional Transit Custom with a battery pack and an electric motor. It is a ground-up design that incorporates advanced electric vehicle technology, cloud connectivity, and digital solutions to deliver new levels of productivity, convenience, and cost savings to small and medium businesses.
What makes the E-Transit Custom different?
The Ford E-Transit Custom is powered by a next-generation electric powertrain that offers a targeted range of up to 380 km (236 miles) on a single charge, which is more than enough for most urban and suburban delivery routes. The battery pack has a usable capacity of 74 kWh and uses pouch cells, also found in the Ford F-150 Lightning electric pickup truck for the US market. These cells have a 12 percent higher energy density than the ones used in the larger E-Transit, which means more range in a smaller package.
The battery can be charged at up to 125 kW using a DC fast charger, taking 41 minutes to go from 15 to 80 percent. Alternatively, it can be fully replenished at 11 kW using an AC charger in just under eight hours. Ford Pro, Ford's new business unit dedicated to commercial vehicles and services, will offer end-to-end solutions to manage and optimize charging for customers, including access to Europe's largest public charging network with over 200,000 charging points.
The E-Transit Custom electric van also features an independent rear suspension, which improves ride comfort, handling, and load capacity. The lower vehicle floor enables easier loading and unloading and increased cargo volume. The panel van version offers a maximum load volume between 5.8 to 9 cubic meters and a load compartment length of 3.45 meters. The sliding door has the widest opening in the segment thanks to a redesigned B- and C-pillar structure.
The Ford E-Transit Custom is available in two power outputs: 135 horsepower (100 kilowatts) and 217 horsepower (160 kilowatts). In both cases, the torque is 415 Newton-meters (306 pound-feet), which is delivered instantly for quick acceleration and smooth driving. The E-Transit Custom can tow up to 2,000 kg (4,409 lbs), which is comparable to the diesel version. It also has a payload capacity of up to 1,100 kg (2,425 lbs), which is not compromised by the battery weight.
