The midsize pickup market is one of the most dynamic and diverse segments in the automotive industry, with different models catering to different needs and preferences of customers. Some are designed for off-road adventures, some for urban comfort, and some for balance. But a new challenger aims to offer more than just a compromise. It is the 2024 Mitsubishi L200, also known as the Triton in some markets, and it is a completely redesigned model that claims to deliver more power, capability, comfort, and technology than ever before.
The 2024 Mitsubishi L200 pickup truck is the sixth generation of the popular pickup truck that has been in production since 1978. It is based on a new ladder frame chassis that is 60 percent more rigid than the previous generation, thanks to the use of high-tensile steel. This improves the truck's handling, stability, and durability, as well as its towing capacity, which is now on par with the best in its class at 7,716 pounds (3,500 kilograms). The L200 also features a new suspension system that consists of a double-wishbone front and a leaf spring rear setup, with improved shock absorbers and stabilizer bars. The result is a smoother and more comfortable ride on any terrain.
The new Mitsubishi L200 is powered by a new 2.4-liter turbodiesel engine that comes in three different power outputs: 148 horsepower (110 kilowatts) and 243 pound-feet (330 Newton-meters) of torque, 181 hp (135 kW) and 316 lb-ft (430 Nm) of torque, and 201 hp (150 kW) and 346 lb-ft (470 Nm) of torque. The engine is paired with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission, both featuring a shift-by-wire system that eliminates the mechanical linkage between the shifter and the gearbox. The Mitsubishi L200 pickup truck also offers two different four-wheel-drive systems: the Super Select 4WD-II and the Easy Select 4WD. The former has a center limited-slip differential that can vary the torque distribution between the front and rear axles and seven driving modes: Normal, Eco, Gravel, Snow, Mud, Sand, and Rock. The latter has a simpler layout with four modes: 2H (rear-wheel drive), 4H (four-wheel drive), 4HLc (four-wheel drive with locked center differential), and 4LLc (low-range with locked center differential).
The 2024 Mitsubishi L200 also boasts a host of advanced safety and driver assistance features, such as forward collision mitigation, blind spot warning, lane change assist, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, hill descent control, hill start assist, trailer stability assist, multi around monitor. The latter prevents unintended acceleration when the driver mistakenly presses the gas pedal instead of the brake in tight parking situations.
